Lending a Helping Hand: Chiles Students Getting Involved or Not?

With the holidays right around the corner, Chiles is doing everything that it can to make sure that no matter who or where you are, you are having just an amazing holiday as everyone else. In the spirit of giving, many teachers have started food drives and package mailing, encouraging the students to lend a hand in the cause.

The Goodwill clothing drive is an easy way the Chiles students can donate to charity. Passed out in homeroom recently were Goodwill bags that you could fill with any unwanted or old clothes, and return to the school to donate to the local Goodwills in Tallahassee. In my homeroom, at least, many students seemed excited to donate, many commenting on the amount of old clothes just hanging in their closet. “I love helping out in anyway that I can,” says junior Josh Swim, “It’s so easy to throw what you don’t want anymore in a bag and drive it down the street to Goodwill. Why wouldn’t anyone want to participate?”

There are some charities, though, that are getting little attention from the students at Chiles. The Alumni Defender Holiday Packages that were started by Mrs. Tammy is not doing so well. Walking in and out of classes hardly any of these holiday packages have any of the desired items for our troops. Even teachers constant reminding isn’t enough for the students to get involved. Many teachers have resorted to giving extra credit to those who bring anything in; this at least gets some items in the boxes. Some teachers, on the other hand, strongly disagree with this practice, such as orchestra teacher Mr. Miller who says, “Student’s motivation to be charitable shouldn’t be for rewards or for their benefit, they should do it because it is right.”

I agree that students need to become more involved in these simple, easy charities that Chiles offers. It doesn’t require much but paying a few dollars or rummaging through your closet for five minutes. It’s for an excellent cause, so I’d like to see the students get more involved and make the holidays special for everyone.
