During the four years students spend at Chiles, many try to volunteer in their community and earn hours for different programs and scholarships. There are some students, however, that truly enjoy volunteering and try to do it as much as possible. June Rhew, a senior at Chiles, has over 150 hours stored up since his freshman year and is still volunteering as much as he can. He first started volunteering at his church, The Korean Baptist Church, as a way to get hours for the Bright Futures Scholarship. During his freshman year, however, he went to World Changers International, a religious congregation used to build people’s spiritual beliefs and help rebuild homes in an underprivileged area. During this trip, June found out what he really loved to do was help people and it made him more aware of his relationship with God and his community. “It was like a two in one package deal,” June says, “I was doing what I loved to do plus I got my hours along the way.” Since then June goes to his church as much as possible and is even a guitarist for his church’s praise band. Volunteering has taught June to treat people with more respect and motivate him to become a better person.
