School Rivalry: Gone Too Far?

On Friday, January 22, one of the most popular Boys Basketball games in Tallahassee took place; Chiles versus Maclay. As usual, the gym nearly reached the capacity limit from students of both sides. But as most know, there was a heightened element of excitement and anticipation due to recent controversy surrounding these two schools.
On Tuesday, January 19, Maclay was vandalized, resulting in $3,000 worth of damage to the campus. The culprits spray painted vulgar messages and images across the school’s campus, and threw toilette paper everywhere. But why were all fingers pointed to Chiles students? One of the messages that were left stated, “CHS Owns You!”
So, at the basketball game, there was a surplus in both students attendance, security. The existing tension was magnified when many CHS students arrived with recently made shirts that boldly stated the familiar phrase, “CHS Owns You!” According to the Tallahassee Democrat, the gym was so packed, that there was only standing room, and the overflow of Maclay fans were forced to stand behind their school’s bench.
Though this rivalry has existed for a while, and has gotten very heated in recent years, there is no excuse for vandalism. Maclay’s Principle, Bill Jablon, said that this could potentially have an effect on future Chiles versus Maclay matches. He might decide that one basketball game is not worth $3,000, and take Chiles off of the schedule of play. One immature decision might end the most popular annual basketball game for good.
