For primarily the ninth and tenth grade students, History Fair is in full swing. The school level judging will occur on February fourth, and at the time of writing, the Chiles History Fair coordinator, Mrs. Watson, did not have an idea of how many would advance. Students are still in the process of revising their process papers and bibliographies.
Mrs. Watson has been the History Fair coordinator for 19 years. After the initial round at Chiles, selected students will advance to the District level and compete against other high schools in the area. The first and second place winners in each category will advance to the State Level, and the top two winners in each category there go to Nationals, held in Washington D.C.
Chiles has traditionally done well. Last year, Dana Edwards and Katelyn Varn advanced to Nationals. Dana said in an interview, “History Fair gives students the opportunity to find a historical topic that they can be passionate about and yet learn to have fun in the research process. The program allows students to engage their creativity through papers, documentaries, exhibits, websites, and performances. Yes, History Fair can be fun through healthy competition!”
