On Tuesday, February 23rd, one of the most anticipated events of the year took place in the Chiles High auditorium. Consisting of moving spoken word recitations, dramatic monologues, and lively music, this year’s Black History Assembly definitely earned the title of “Best Ever!” The unique theme was “Black History through the Arts”, and that method of celebration and honor proved to be memorable.

Initiating the event was a beautiful rendition of “Lift Every Voice” by Keke Poole and Jarred Stewart, followed by Jerrod Stewart, who set the tone of what was ahead. Additional highlights included the Michael Jackson Tribute, spoken word poems by Black on Black Rhymes, and the Caribbean dance performance. Darryl Duncan, a senior from Rickards High, contributed with an original poem entitled, “From Black Face to the Dream”.  He was very excited to be involved with the celebration, and thought it was a great opportunity to share his message. “It was a nice conglomeration of African to African American history and present talents,” said Darryl.

Nothing but positive reviews followed this well programmed assembly, which took much time and preparation. “I think that it was the best [assembly] ever! It was fun to be able to interact with the performers,” said senior, Akilah Muhammed. Nicole Gilliard, a senior as well, had never been to a Chiles Black History Assembly, and prior to Tuesday, was disappointed in our school’s seeming lack of recognition for Black History Month in general. However, afterwards, she was thoroughly satisfied. “It was very exciting and well worth the wait,” stated Nicole. “It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.” Wrapping up Black History Month with an artistic bang, this year’s assembly definitely lived up to its mammoth expectations; great job to all participants!
