Every year chorus, band, drama, orchestra and especially art look forward to showing off their talents to their fellow students and showing them how much fun these activities can be. Though many of the musical and drama groups get to showcase their work throughout the year at concerts and at out of school functions, many students outside these groups never get to see them. Spirit of the arts day was a day created just for these students to show off their talents and how much effort goes into these performances.
The art part of the day took place outside in the front of the school with the Fifth Annual Chalk Walk. All art students had the chance to enter this contest and over thirty students actually took part in the all day event. Famous artworks such as The Scream and Nighthawks were drawn out in chalk with all the details of the real paintings. Among many of the students that entered Annie Wood and Christine Childers, Katelyn Craft and Dustin Haire, Sarah Tepper and Amanda Hartsfield and Marcus Thomas and Josal Williams were the artists of the blocks that one honorable mention. Rachel Ames and Olivia Wright won the faculty favorite and Catherine Liu and Kejiang Jiang won the popular vote.
The performance part of the day took part in the auditorium, where top drama students, Skyler Machett and Christine Arnold hosted and introduced the musical groups for the day. Throughout the day, many different chorus groups sang including our acappella group, Pardon Our Dust, or as many call them, POD. Chorus student Andrea Melton sung with Women’s Chorus and had nothing but great things to say. “We sounded great,” she says, “Students always come out to the sports events and it’s nice to finally give a day to the arts.” There was no debate that the best showcase from drama was the humorous solo performance that Megan Geraci did which gave everyone a good laugh. Even smaller musical groups such as guitar ensemble and orchestra got to show off their stuff.
The Spirit of the Arts day was a great success this year and any of the students not involved were thoroughly impresses with the performances and the art. A day to the arts is definitely going to continue and it will be even bigger and better next year.
