The 2010 Winter Olympics came to a close at the end of February, signaling the end of a thrilling competition in which the whole world would compete. This years’ Olympics were filled with sorrow, anticipation and exhilaration as highlights of the sports include the death of an athlete, a number of glitches in ceremonies and arena tickets, as well as a couple of human errors and gaffes.

The son of a Soviet-era slider, Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luge sledder lost his life on a run at Whistler early on in the games. It was a terrible tragedy that marred the reputation of the Olympics this year, highlighting it for the wrong reasons. Amongst this grief, however, there was triumph, as the USA Hockey team beat the Canadian team in the Preliminary round before losing to them in the finals. These were some of the mostly highly viewed games in the country of Canada with the rematch being broadcast on 5 different networks in 3 different languages.

Yes, this years’ Olympics were a competition to remember in the years to come, and hopefully when we look back we will not only remember the parting of an Olympic athlete, but also the victories and triumphs of the days as well.

The closing ceremonies saw Canadian born actor, William Shatner as well as an appearance by Michael J. Fox, both receiving standing ovations from the largely Canadian crowd.

On Sunday February 7th, 2010 the world gathered in front of the television for the most popular football event of the year, Super bowl XLIV (44). The New Orleans Saints vs. the Indianapolis Colts; both teams had nearly perfect seasons making them the top dogs of the NFL. This was the Saints’ first ever appearance in the super bowl, and indeed it was an entertaining one. To begin the first half, both teams came off slowly. But the Colts were the first to score with a field goal. The first half was ended with a score of 10-6 with the Colts on top. In the second half, the Saints cracked down on defense and offensively initiated a comeback. Tracy Porter turned the game around with an interception that was retuned for a touchdown at the end of the forth quarter, which turned out to be the final blow. They expanded the lead to 14 points with less than three minutes to play. The Saints kept their defense tight and made sure that the Colts did not score, under any circumstance. The final score was 31-17 with the Saints marchin’ in with their first ever super bowl win and Drew Brees taking home the MVP trophy.

Friday night: perfect weather, bleachers packed full with excited fans, thundering cheers. The opposing teams, like Timberwolves (no, I’m not biased), about to fight for the food. What’s the food, though?

The victory. Ever since last year’s loss against Maclay, Chiles had been in preparation for this particular game. This was what many of us liked to refer to as “THE” game of the entire season. Grant it, I had heard rumors that one night during the week before the game, a said pack of Timberwolves prowled over to Maclay for a little pre-game fun… but hey, rumors are rumors. At seven o’clock exactly, the crowds, on either side, came to life, like none ever seen before. Joking taunts and full support spewed from the bleachers as the players took to the court.

The game had started; an upbeat competition full of neck-to-neck scoring, to performances from various groups to rally the crowds.

Jamin Thomas captured the home crowd with 25 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Danny Young added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

The final score? 55 to 48 – a close game, but a win for Chiles, nonetheless.

Kristen King, a player on the girl’s basketball team, said “It’s a great victory for Chiles; the effort was obvious, and I’m glad we’re back on track.” I’m sure most are happy about winning the last game of the season, and we can only hope for an equally compelling season next year.

Congratulations to the boys and girls cross country teams on their participation in last weekend’s State 3A Cross Country Championships held at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City.

In the girls meet, Chiles placed three runners among the top ten overall and all five scoring runners among the top twenty-six as they scored a meet low 40 points and captured the 2009 CLASS 3A STATE TITLE! With this win the girls cross country team finished perfect by winning every meet they competed in this season. In the past two years they won every meet except one and finished second in that meet. They joined a small list of schools in Florida that have won consecutive state titles. Since 2003, they have finished first or second on five different occasions.

Sophomore Carly Thomas picked a great day to capture individual honors for the first time this season. She place first overall among the 179 runners with her time of 18:20 for the 5000 meter course. Carly’s individual state title win was the first ever for a Chiles female cross country athlete. She edged out teammate, sophomore Lily Williams, who finished second in 18:21.

Other members who represented Chiles in the win were: Senior Kendall Andrews-10th (18:55), Junior Jodie McGuff-13th (19:13), Junior Kelley Bahn-26th (19:55), Sophomore Jessica Gillard-112th (22:01) and Junior Stephanie Reynolds- 169th (24:21).

Win this win, the team has been extended an accepted an invitation to compete in this weekend’s Nike Southeast Regional in Cary, North Carolina where they will compete against state champion teams representing 13 states. At stake is a trip to the Nike Team National Championships which will be held in Portland, Oregon on December 5. The top two teams and the top five individuals will earn an all expenses paid trip to compete in the championships. Last season the team placed 7th overall among the 13 state champion teams that participated.

In the boys meet, the “WOLVES” did not have the meet that they would have liked. After improving in each meet this season and entering the meet seeded eighth, the team finished in fifteen place among the twenty four participating schools. Senior Branden Lingerfelt recorded the highest finish overall for the team as he placed 46th (16:50) overall among the 186 runners.

Other members of the team who competed in the meet were: Sam Sutton- 63rd (17:05); Taylor Buzzard-86th (17:25); Patrick O’ Bryant-136th (18:10); Crawford Conrad-140th (18:14); Joey Vannoy-145th (18:17) and Andikan Eno-182nd (19:58).

Baseball star, Will West, impresses his peers, teachers, and coaches more and more. Now that he’s headed down a road of success and has signed to play for Georgia Tech, he has become one of CHS’s star athletes!

Will West has been playing baseball for 11 years, and has been pitching since he was eight years old! He started pitching when others told him he had an advantage over right-handed pitchers because he was left-handed. Pitching is the absolute number one reason why Will loves baseball, “I love pitching because I feel like I’m in total control of the game and that the game is in my hands,” Will says. Will has pitched 60 innings, has a 1.08 ERA, 82 strikes, and 15 walks!

Signing on with Georgia Tech not only lets Will play baseball in the best baseball conference in all of college (the ACC) but it also gives him the opportunity to achieve his other dreams: to graduate from Georgia Tech with a business degree . Will West, Good luck to Will West with his baseball career at Georgia Tech and we all wish you the best! Remember “when the roosters are crowing and the cows are kicking, ducks fly together!”
