On November 4th, rallies sponsored by the Iran government went awry when the opposition party led acts of violence and hostility through the streets of Tehran in remembrance of the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979. The rallies were an attempt to show contempt for America and the Western culture, but went way out of hand.
Many Iranians chanted “Death to America!” while others set fire to American flags and terrorized streets. The scene was so serious that messages spread to Iranian families to stay inside their homes until the rallies were over. Police officers armed with tear gas, bullets, and other weapons were beaten while attempting to end the riots.
The Iran Hostage Crisis during Jimmy Carter’s presidency took place when radical Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran 30 years ago. The students held American personnel hostage for 444 days, severing ties between the two countries.
“The Americans are scared of religious democracy in our country more than anything else,” lawmaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel said at the official rally. “This is because Iran’s religious democracy could turn into a role model in other countries.” (The Los Angeles Times)
President Obama made it clear in his speech on the crisis anniversary that the “United States of America wants to move beyond this past, and seeks a relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran based upon mutual interests and mutual respect.”
